Stegosaurus Garden

  • A beautiful, curving retaining wall topped with Cherokee flagstone transforms what had been a virtually unusable back yard slope into a two-tiered garden and creates a visual sense of movement in what was previously a long, boring space. Above the wall, young Japanese maples rise above colorful ground covers in shades of purple, pink and white. Below, the Cherokee flagstone path links the outdoor dining area on the west side with the grassy play area on the east.

Goleta Foothills

A new addition caused the side yard to shrink significantly. New, curved retaining walls, flagstone walkways and colorful plantings now create an inviting, private space.

A whimsical stegosaurus rises above pink impatiens and Mona Lavender plectranthus. The stego's weathered tones match the Japanese maples on either side in the background.

The narrow area along the back of the new addition comes alive with long-blooming shrubs, perennials and trees. The new stegosaurus provides a fun focal point seen through the family room's French doors.

Raised beds bearing bountiful vegetables now fill an unused side yard, while lawn for a children's play area carpets the remaining space.

Another look at the sinuous retaining walls and plantings.
