The Mesa: Succulents Rule

Succulents by the Sea

Perched high above the Pacific, this Mesa garden enjoys gorgeous views of the ocean and the Channel Islands in the distance.

A series of boulder-edged terraces step down the hill, while decomposed granite and landscape timber walkways intersect and unify the space. Toward the bottom sits a flat spot just wide enough for small patches of a dymondia lawn and a bench to enjoy the extraordinary view.

Succulents and other salt-tolerant, ocean-loving plants fill the terraces. Flowering times were carefully staged in order to provide a succession of colorful blooms throughout the year. The spikey silhouettes of the succulents contrast beautifully with the lower, mounded forms of smaller succulents and ground covers, while the California Gold gravel mulch provides the perfect, light-colored backdrop to showcase the many textures, forms and vibrant foliage colors.
